About the artist

Jane Batista is an Afro-Indigenous performance photographer and poet. Self-taught, she has been dedicated to photography since 2020, using exclusively her phone for both image capture and editing. Through experiments with self-portraiture, she has developed a form of expression and a space of refuge for her fantasies, fears, and dreams. In her work, Batista uses her body and incorporates objects from her domestic surroundings, in a process of revealing her reality while exploring the many possibilities of the self. Her sensitive gaze also extends to the landscapes and characters of Fortaleza’s urban coastline.

Batista presented the solo shows Quem te devora?, Brazilian Embassy, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2026); and has participated in group exhibitions such as Prêmio PIPA 2026 – Ano 17, Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2026); Um oceano dentro de mim, Fundação Edson Queiroz, Fortaleza, Brazil (2025); Casale Monferrato Photography Biennale, Alessandria, Italy (2025); Ubuntu / eu sou porque nós somos, Ponte Cultura, Langwasser Community Center, Nuremberg, Germany (2024); Delírio ardente, Cave Gallery, Fortaleza, Brazil (2024); Onde guardaremos este instante de alegria?, Fotofestival SOLAR, Estação das Artes, Fortaleza, Brazil (2024); and the VI Bienal do Sertão, Banco do Nordeste Cultural Center Cariri, Juazeiro do Norte, Brazil (2023). She was awarded the PIPA Prize 2026, Brazil, and her publication Dizer o silêncio was selected for the Festival ZUM 2024, Instituto Moreira Salles, São Paulo, Brazil.
